8 Healthy Granola Bars Approved by a Registered Dietitian

Have you ever felt overwhelmed when deciding which granola or protein bars to buy? If so, this article is for you! The following granola and protein bars have been ‘Dietitian-approved’ and can help you get started on making some healthier food choices.

Each bar has varying amounts of carbohydrates, sugars, fiber and protein which does not necessarily mean some are ‘better’ than others however, some may be more appropriate based on activity levels, individual needs and pairing with others foods.

In general, when choosing a bar for an everyday snack (not during or after exercise), I would aim for one that’s made from whole foods, has few ingredients or additives, is high in fiber (>5g/serving), low in saturated fat (<2.5g), moderate in carbohydrates (20-30g), low in sugars (<15g) and added sugars (<5g) (unless during or post-exercise), moderate-high in protein (8-20g).

I would also recommend pairing a bar with a fruit to increase the carbohydrates, or a Greek yogurt cup, some nuts/seeds, or cottage cheese to bump up the protein to make a more substantial snack or to meet your individual needs.

A couple of reminders:

  1. There is no replacement for ‘real food’- I would recommend using bars in moderation for on-the-go purposes when needed, not as meal replacements.
  2. Just because a product is gluten free, vegan, lactose free, etc. does not mean that it is necessarily healthier.
  3. When choosing a snack or bar for a post-exercise recovery snack, we want have a high amount of protein (20-30g) and carbohydrates (>30g) to help kickstart the recovery process.
  4. This is not a paid advertisement & there is no conflict of interest to disclose.
